The Tatras are the only mountains in Poland with alpine characteristics. Although they occupy a small area they allow expeditions for every level of experience.

Winter is a period when the mountains require good fitness and equipment preparation. In addition, avalanche danger mobilises us to train annually in anticipation and action to search for and help extract those injured in avalanches. A 7-10 day trip to the Tatras in winter gives a lot of fun in the terrain ‘far from civilisation, even though it is very close and waiting behind two mountains.

We pack in such a way that we each take 2 backpacks - a large one in which we fit everything we need including a second rucksack. We spend the night in one or more mountain huts - we choose them depending on our plan. Overnight in a mountain hut also makes the logistics of meals easier and this reduces the need to transport them.

What do we like best in the mountains? Everything :) . Sunshine and wide, sweeping panoramas, climbing peaks for hours, navigating in zero visibility, long passes in extremely difficult conditions with full expedition loads and.... short walks around the refuge. One of the most beautiful moments is when, after a long climb in deep snow with very poor visibility, a strong wind that blows goggles and.... there is an unexpected moment when the sun comes out for a moment. Sometimes it's a few seconds, sometimes longer.

Then the mountains around you appear and say: hey, it's us! We surround you with snow and wind, but we also show you our beauty... This is worth every effort, which is later associated in an extremely positive way. The fact that the Tatras are not very extensive is often confusing for beginner hikers who, not knowing how to prepare, make mistakes that can lead to very dangerous situations.

Whether you are experienced or not, always carry a loaded phone, torch and power bank. On your phone, install the ‘Rescue’ app which, with one press, will connect you and show your position to TOPR rescuers. Save the emergency number to TOPR: 985 and +48 601 100 300.
